paper ruffles

Nows the time for the paper ruffles!
 one by one i have started folding the a4 paper like origami and individually attaching it onto my structure with a glue gun.

THIS TOOK ME JUST OVER 2 HOURs.

now it has hit me how much i have got to do.

Lining Paper

To be able to attach the paper ruffles onto this wire structure i had to somehow cover the entire piece in some form of paper so that it has a base.
Due to the scale of the structure it thought lining paper would be the easiest! I used over 15m worth of this as i wrapped it around the structure.

Wire Structure Update

I thought i had finished the wire structure but it seems it is not that strong and stable. I have had to add more diagonal strips of wire so that it will add more stability to the structure.
Using the spot welder scares the hell out of me. Especially when it sparks.!!

Guys i have started to create my final piece. IT WILL BE MASSIVE.
Here is my progress on the wire structure which will form the base of my skirt. YES it is over 6 ft but the model will have the stand on a stool !

Ceramic Slip Technique

My teacher introduced me with a new technique which involved dipping material into a ceramic mixture to which when it dried in the kiln it would hold to the pattern of the material i used to dip.

I intended to create a shoulder piece that hung onto the shoulders and wrapped around the neck. However it fell in the kiln it had shrunk and so it was too small.

I really liked the effect of this, as the slip holds onto the pattern of the material i dipped into the mixture. I also like the shape of this piece. After this i attempted to create a corset using the same material, yet this was a failure also as it fell in the kiln.

I really wanted to make use of this slip and make it work after several attempts so i thought i could try for a third time lucky. I attempted to create another shoulder piece as the same as the first one, but use a males mannequin as this would be larger and then it would shrink more into a ladies size. With the excess material i made a small hat.

As the others did, i had no luck. The shoulder piece fell in the kiln so this did not work. But the hat came out fine, but it was too small. 

After all this, i decided to alter my design for my final piece and not use this technique. But at least i tried it several times.

Viktor & Rolf influenced my second piece. Here I used a wire structure, which I knew was beneficial through its strength to create a large structure. On this I folded bundles of ruffles from a mixture of tissue and normal paper to create tone and more volume.

Head-piece for my Final Major Project

Ive just updated my page on my new FINAL MAJOR PROJECT for my foundation course. My title is Exaggerated Repetitive forms, which I'm inspired by the narnia ice queen!.. Im sticking with using Paper as my main material but i will add extra things for details. Take a look for more details but heres a sneak preview of my first developmental piece where i have created a Headpiece Inspired by Piers Atkinson and Alexander McQueen.
